Rising Language and Behavioural Problems Among Children in Germany

New data released in Germany reveal a significant increase in language development and behavioral problems among children starting school. Health authorities emphasize that boys are particularly more affected by these issues. According to school entry examinations conducted in Lower Saxony, one in four children experiences difficulties in language development. Data from 2023 show that approximately 25% of children have language skill deficits, with even higher rates in some regions.

Authorities stress that the problem is not limited to language development alone. There has also been a noticeable rise in attention deficits, restlessness, motor skill difficulties, and challenges in social interaction among children. Experts point out that excessive digital media use is closely linked to these issues.

Among the main causes identified are the effects of the pandemic, lack of family communication, insufficient reading to children, and reduced opportunities for social interaction. Children from lower educational backgrounds and those with migrant backgrounds are reported to be at higher risk.

Research also indicates that boys require more support in language development compared to girls. In some regions, the need for language support among boys approaches 30%, while it remains significantly lower among girls. Teachers report that these developments are directly affecting classroom environments. Due to increasing behavioral problems and lack of basic skills, a substantial portion of class time is spent addressing these issues, reducing the time available for academic learning.
