Teacher Training in Canada to Be Reduced to One Year

Ontario, Canada, is preparing to reduce the length of teacher education from two years to one year to ease the teacher shortage. The new regulation announced by the Ford government aims to allow teacher candidates to graduate and enter classrooms more quickly, while also placing greater emphasis on practical training. Authorities are planning not only to shorten the duration of the program but also to establish a minimum practicum length that will increase teacher candidates’ in-class experience.

According to the change, teacher education programs, which currently last four semesters spread over two years, will be converted into a structure of three consecutive semesters condensed into 12 months. The government argues that this step will bring future teachers into the education system more quickly and respond faster to the teacher needs of communities across Ontario. It is also stated that new pathways into the teaching profession will be explored for candidates coming from fields such as early childhood education.

Ontario’s current practicum length for teachers is known to be one of the shortest in the country at 80 days. Education Minister Calandra said that teacher candidates need to spend a longer period of time in front of a classroom, adding that their goal is to reach one of the longest practicum lengths in the country. Previously, the Ontario Teachers’ Federation had also proposed three consecutive semesters over 12 months and a 100-day practicum.
